Traces of a pioneer - Johanna Dohnal in augmented reality, or: "Keeping quiet for tactical reasons has always proven to be a mistake."
Johanna Dohnal’s political achievements have profoundly changed Austrian society, from the reform of family law to the protection of women against violence. Their impact is still felt today, and in times of growing anti-feminist, anti-queer and anti-democratic sentiment they are more important than ever. The Augmented Reality installations at Johanna-Dohnal-Platz invites visitors to learn more about Johanna Dohnal’s achievements and her historical significance. AR installations form a digital monument honoring Johanna Dohnal (1939–2010) – Austria's first Minister for Women's Affairs and a symbol of the struggle for equality – and serve as a publicly visible sign of feminist remembrance culture.

Eni Brandner, Kristina Hofmann, Susi Jirkuff, Nayeun Park, Veronika Schubert and Anna Vasof have created six virtual sculptures that relate to Johanna Dohnal and relevant socio-political debates in both a historical and a current context. The artistically diverse, animated contributions bring the location to life virtually, transforming it into a place of democratic action and reflection on social and political conditions.

JOHANNA DOHNAL - VISIONARY OF FEMINISM is a testimony to Johanna Dohnal, a significant woman in Austrian history, and the film thus offers a role model for today's and the coming generations. We can see ourselves in her; in her victories as well as her failures. A Film against forgetting and for an equal future. The well-known director and activist Sabine Derflinger takes her cue from Dohnal's working methods and offers Film holistic portrait in her Film, whose many facets are illuminated by a wide variety of young and old interviewees. The urgency of bringing "Die Dohnal" back into the public consciousness is not only due to Derflinger's personal encounter with her (Dohnal and her partner Annemarie Aufreiter full throttle part), but also to the disastrous situation of the Austrian media, which, according to Derflinger, "is 80% or more in conservative hands." Incidentally, Film a brief theatrical release due to lockdown, we were able to see the Film at Diagonale– The Unfinished / Online Festival exclusively as an online premiere.
